AAC Modeling Demo: Wind-Up Toys

By Hsiao-Ting Su May 31, 2020 Posted in AAC Assessment & Therapy

1. Motivation is everything!

Use games or toys the child loves. Today’s demonstration uses wind-up toys!

2. How to Model AAC

While speaking, press the corresponding vocabulary on the AAC system.

Start by modeling simple core vocabulary, such as: want, help, go, stop.

3. How to Prompt

Gestural prompt: Point your finger near the target vocabulary to provide a visual cue.

Physical assistance: Avoid hand-over-hand guidance, as the child won’t be able to see the screen. Instead, place your hand under the child’s hand so they maintain control and can see the vocabulary they’re selecting.

4. Respond to the Child

Observe the child. Whether they use sounds or gestures to express themselves, respond to them and model on the AAC system. For example: “Oh, you’re reaching out your hand — you want help!” (while simultaneously pressing “help” on the AAC).
